Microdermabrasion
How it works
Medical microdermabrasion employs the use of very fine salt crystals to abrade the skins surface with the immediate effect of smoothing skin texture. In order to make a difference to superficial imperfections such as some pigment patches, sun damage roughness or to control blackheads, breakouts and milia a series of up to six treatments will be necessary. The assault on the skins surface generates a gradual response in the form of collagen deposition and thickening of the skin. Whilst this may not actually change the profile of scars or fine lines it can alter the reflective index of the skin enough to make some scars and lines less visible. Increasing cell turnover on the surface of the skin then makes it easier to get antioxidant serums and skincare products into deeper layers.
The procedure
The face and neck are treated together in a 45 minute treatment that will also include a masque and facial massage.
It is possible and beneficial to book microdermabrasion and peels treatments together in the same session.
Repeat procedures
For best results weekly or fortnightly sessions are recommended for up to 6 treatments.
Recovery time
After the initial pinkness abates within a few hours, there is occasionally some flakiness, which make last a couple of days but is easily treated with moisturisers. There is no need to stay out of circulation.
The downside
- Results can be slow to show- immediate brightening of a complexion may be evident after just a couple of treatment but breaking down pigment, controlling acne and especially smoothing fine lines, requires time and perseverance.
- Treatments for acne can actually make the breakouts worse before they get better.
- Skin can become a little sensitive toward the end of a course of treatment for a few days.
- It is a sun sensitising procedure and the use of high factor SPF sun blocks during and for 6 weeks after treatment is important. Many patients will select winter months to start a course of microdermabrasion
